Renovating A Historic Downtown Pulaski Treasure

Located on the east side of the historic Downtown Pulaski Square, The Standard Drug Building has been a fixture in the community for decades. Last year, owners Dr. Steve Osborne and Dr. Clay Osborne approached us about renovating the building into new office space. 

The owners have a passion for Pulaski and decided to hire Brindley Construction to make their ideas come to life. They wanted to celebrate The Standard Building as not only a reference to the past, but as a standard to what our beautiful, historic buildings can be with a little tender loving care. They also saw huge potential for the building’s use and also in the beauty of the brick walls, wood ceilings and original flooring.

When the Osbornes were presented with the opportunity to purchase the building on South First Street, they jumped at it. Steve Osborne was hooked on the history and importance of the adjacent Giles County Courthouse. “I was very excited to acquire that old Standard Drug building right across from the Courthouse,” says Steve. “I think it has one of the best two or three locations on the Square. I immediately began thinking of the architectural beauty that the building possessed, and how best to bring that beauty to its former glory.”

For the past few months, the Brindley Team, led by Project Manager Bryan Brindley and Superintendent Charlie Helton, have been renovating and upgrading the two-story vacant building. The ceilings and walls have been fully restored and the space most recently occupied by The Mustard Seed Antiques store, is now first-class office space. 

The project was not without its challenges. The walls of the building were three bricks thick and one of the walls had a large hole in it. Fortunately, the Brindley crew was able to retrieve the bricks inside the hole, so the repair could be made using original materials. There was also a large safe that had to be removed from the building and some of the flooring was not safe to walk on until it was shored up. With older buildings, you never know what you are going to find when you start renovating.

“We wanted the old Standard Drug building to become the new standard for building quality and beauty on the square,” says Steve Osborne. “We chose Brindley Construction because they shared our goal from the start and all the way to completion. They understood our vision. They understood our budget. And they made it happen.”

The Osbornes, along with Brindley Construction and TN Crossroads Realty hosted a Renovation Reveal on January 29, 2020 to unveil the project. Refreshments were provided by Bluebird Café and more than 100 people attended the reveal.

As the county seat of Giles County, we understand that Pulaski is the core of our community’s cultural and architectural heritage. And, we really enjoy working with owners, like Steve and Clay, who also believe our downtown is the heart and soul of our community.
