Revitalizing Columbia’s Main Fire Station | City of Columbia Fire Station No. 1

Originally constructed in the 1960s, the City of Columbia's primary fire station had become outdated and no longer met the needs of its growing community. Brindley Construction completed the facility's first comprehensive renovation and expansion, transforming the station into a modern, efficient headquarters while maintaining emergency response capabilities throughout construction.

The project included a complete interior renovation with replacement of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems, along with an 11,000-square-foot addition featuring expanded administrative offices, new dormitories, upgraded kitchen and living areas, enhanced life-safety systems, and an F5-rated reinforced storm shelter. Exterior improvements included new pavement, utility upgrades, and the construction of a 12-foot-tall, 300-foot-long retaining wall in a challenging, confined site. Throughout construction, Brindley successfully navigated permitting delays, labor shortages, and complex phasing while maintaining one operational apparatus bay for emergency response.

The completed facility now provides firefighters with a safer, more functional workspace while increasing the station's capacity to serve the City of Columbia for decades to come. The project was completed with zero recordable injuries and demonstrates Brindley's commitment to quality, collaboration, and delivering exceptional results under challenging conditions.

That commitment was recognized with Excellence in Construction Awards from both the ABC Greater Tennessee and ABC North Alabama Chapters, was named ABC North Alabama's Project of the Year, and earned a prestigious National Excellence in Construction Pyramid Award from Associated Builders and Contractors.
