Formerly known as Columbia Military Academy, Columbia Academy (CA) has grown into a staple for Maury County, Tennessee. Since 1979, Columbia Academy has given students the confidence to thrive and serve in their community, and with the newest Vest Hall and Spring Hill Campus additions, CA will be able to continue this tradition for years to come.
Brindley Construction added two separate additions to Columbia Academy's Vest Hall Building.
Vest Hall serves as the Elementary School for the Columbia Campus and the additions were completed in
December 2022. The first addition was completed during the summer of 2022 and released for the school to start its 2022-2023 school year. This addition consisted of two additional classrooms in a 2-story addition. The second addition was a 2-story addition with a new music room and two additional classrooms (music room - pictured right). It was released to the school in December 2022 to start using on their return from Christmas break.
The challenges on this project were mainly related to tying into the existing structures built in the 1960s. The design team and field crew had to come together to overcome design setbacks and create unique solutions to move forward. The second addition of this project on the second story had an elevation change within the second floor. This was a result of tying into two previous additions to the original building. The addition we added tied into all three structures. A disruption we have come accustomed to is the supply chain issues. This project was originally designed with steel bar joists to support the floors and roof. Due to lead times of bar joists, this was redesigned - by Brindley's request - to wood framing, allowing us to maintain the timeline.
Opened in 2010, Columbia Academy Spring Hill Campus provides preschool through sixth grade. Renovations and additions on this campus included remodeling existing bathrooms and adding approximately 5,000 square feet of new learning space consisting of two new classrooms, an art room, and a music room.
This project did not have any ductwork for HVAC systems inside the four classrooms; instead, each classroom has its own stand-alone unit from Bard Systems. The exterior of this building was designed with a cement board panel system that has trim at every joint to give it the look of EFIS. We had a tight deadline for turning over the existing restrooms before students returned on August 1 and having the new addition released prior to the students returning after fall break. Both deadlines were able to be met because we had superb management from our superintendent and office staff along with excellent working relationships with our subcontractors.
